Art Tatum African American Resource Center

Providing cultural, educational and historical information on the varied and unique African American cultural heritage and experiences on Northwest Ohio, the Art Tatum African American Resource Center was established in 1989. It evolved when an extensive local and regional research revealed a need for an African American cultural center for all residents of Northwest Ohio. Located in the Kent Branch Library in Toledo’s historic Old West End, the Tatum Center is a permanent and dependable community resource.

The Collection

The Art Tatum African American Resource Center houses a collection of more then 84,750 circulating and reference material, consisting of books, magazines, journals, DVD/videotapes, compact discs and photos, and is available for public access.  Schools, church groups, university students, study groups and residents of Northwest Ohio utilize the Tatum Center’s resources for study and research.  The resources serve all ages and have become a focal point for information on the history and culture of people of African descent.

Programs

The Tatum Center’s on-site programs encourage a heightened appreciation for Black history and culture and provide the community with opportunities for growth and understanding of the Black experience.  Ongoing programs and special events include a monthly book discussion group; visiting speakers and performers; family storytelling; group tours; community forums; observances of special occasions such as Black History Month, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day and Kwanzaa.
