It’s official - I have the adult coloring fever, and the Toledo Lucas County Public Library’s caught it as well! I first fell back in love with coloring at a regional Burning Man event, Lakes of Fire. Artist Richard Stocker (who is amazingly talented and worth checking out) brought some of his pen and ink drawings for people to color. I grabbed a sheet and some markers, and got lost in coloring for several hours. My friends all came and went, while I just sat and kept on coloring. It was so relaxing and enjoyable and the best part was that I had a wonderful new piece of art that was also connected to an equally wonderful memory to take with me.

After I returned home, I looked Stocker up online to see if I might find more of his work to download, and it turns out, he has an incredibly touching story behind how he came to create coloring pages – and it begins with his son, Santi, who passed away from Leukemia in 2003. Read more about their story here.

I’m passionate about coloring because it is about more than just putting pretty colors on a pre-designed page. It involves decision making and precision, and according to many in the medical community, also offers many health benefits. As with formal art therapy, coloring can help with stress and anxiety reduction (take it from this type A perfectionist – it really works!), PTSD, and Dementia.

To encourage others to take up this creative and healthy hobby, the Library is hosting a series of adult coloring programs throughout the summer. So grab your friends and your coloring books, and join us!
