It’s funny how time flies. In the past 30 years, we have experienced a lot: The O.J. Simpson Trial, Hurricane Katrina, and Tom Brady and “Deflatgate.” In this same time period, an equally vast film landscape continued to evolve. Whether you consider yourself a film export, a fan of nostalgia, or just looking for something to watch while perched near the air conditioner, join us for a trip down memory lane. Before you is an eclectic sampling of movies that will be turning 10, 20, and 30 years old this June — and all are available here at the Toledo Lucas County Public Library!

Turning 10

— Dinosaurs, Emotions, and Espionage, Oh My!

Zooming into the last decade, June 2015 brought a mix of thrills and feels. Jurassic World reinvigorated the franchise, while Inside Out gave form to our emotions in a colorful, heartfelt journey. Spy gave us action and laughter, while Insidious: Chapter 3 brought the terror, and Me and Earl and the Dying Girl delivered a poignant, quirky coming-of-age story. Ten years later, these movies prove that whether it’s terror, humor, or tears, the right story always sticks with us.

Turning 20

— From aliens to angst, to…. penguins?!?

Rewind to June 2005, when the big screen was grappling with alien invasions in War of the Worlds and modernizing magic with Bewitched. Meanwhile, nature took the spotlight in the heartwarming documentary March of the Penguins. The streets pulsed with rhythm and raw energy in Rize, and teenage chaos reigned in Havoc. Two decades later, these films still remind us of the diverse stories that captured our imaginations and hearts.

Turning 30

— From Earth to the Stars

From the sweeping romance of The Bridges of Madison County to the heart-pounding space drama Apollo 13, June 1995 had it all. Pocahontas gave way to lush animation and the colors of the wind, while Congo offered a wild adventure into the jungle’s mysterious depths. And, if you were up for something a bit more risqué, Delta of Venus teased with its erotic artistry. It’s a reminder that 30 years ago, movies were already masters at blending action, emotion, and a little bit of magic.
