The Toledo Streets Newspaper (TSN) is a local nonprofit organization dedicated to economically empowering those of our neighbors who might be experiencing poverty in some way. The organization’s website offers insight into how the model operates:
We follow a common model found across the United States. Vendors are self-contracted ‘business owners’ who set their own goals, selling locations and times, while abiding by a code of conduct. They start for free with a temporary badge and 10 papers. After printing costs, vendors keep the profits, which they use for a variety of needs like rent, food, transportation and so on.
The Toledo Streets organization recommend only purchasing from vendors bearing the Toledo Streets badge. New issues are released monthly. The Toledo Streets Newspaper nonprofit organization would like to strongly encourage you to support local TSN vendors whenever possible. In addition to directly supporting your neighbor, you will have access to writing on a wide variety of topics and formats. The paper routinely includes topics pertinent to Toledo, creative writing, interviews and a wealth of other helpful information. While the digitization process meant uploading black and white images to our collections, the newspaper is in fact printed in beautiful color.
The Local History Department invites you to explore their back catalog, such as through the linked issues below on the opioid epidemic, women’s issues and environmental awareness. And be sure to support your local vendor, you’ll be happy you did.
