Memorial gifts

We appreciate you thinking of the Library for your memorial gift and offer three ways to give a gift in tribute to someone in your life.

Honor someone special in your life with an unrestricted gift in their honor.

The Library will engrave a name or small message on a brass plaque (approximately 2-3” width) available at most branches or add a message to a Donor Recognition Screen (approximately 40” monitors) at Sylvania or Mott branches.

The Library will place a label on the inside of a book’s cover, honoring the person of your choosing. Select a subject area and we’ll select the book to honor your loved one. You and the person/family will receive notification of the gift.

Planned giving

Do you have a genuine desire to make a positive difference in our community? Did you know there are many ways to support your Library besides writing a check right now? With a bit of planning, you can include a gift to the Library Legacy Foundation within your overall estate or financial plan that preserves and grows the Library while possibly providing you with tax benefits in return.

Additionally, people who make a planned gift to theLibrary Legacy Foundation become members of the esteemed Carnegie Society whose members are committed to transforming lives and our community for generations. By becoming a Carnegie Society member, you’ll not only lead by example within the community but also receive:

  • Exclusive invitations to various author receptions and programs.
  • Invitation to a special donor luncheon/dinner each year.
  • A twice-yearly newsletter specially created for donors and Carnegie Society Members.
  • Special recognition on a donor screen at Main Library.

Have you already included us in your estate plan? Let us know!

We would welcome the opportunity to talk to you about the planned giving strategy that works best for you. Please call us at 419.259.5196 to get started.

Types of planned gifts the Library Legacy Foundation accepts:

Want to support your Library even after your lifetime? It’s not only possible; it’s easy to do with a beneficiary designation. Just name the Library Legacy Foundation of the Toledo Lucas County Public Library (Federal Tax ID#: 34-1632308) as a beneficiary to receive assets such as retirement plans (IRAs, 401(k), etc.) and life insurance policies after you’re gone. You simply fill out a form that is entirely separate from your will—which makes this approach an easy way to give.

As recognition for your gift, you will become a member of our Carnegie Society.

Not only is it an easy way to give, but it’s also flexible—you aren’t locked into the choices you make today. You can review and adjust beneficiary designations anytime you want.

Do you want to benefit from the tax savings that result from supporting your Library, yet you don’t want to give up any assets you’d like your family to receive someday? You can have it both ways with a charitable lead trust.

What is a charitable lead trust?

You give assets to a trust that pays our Foundation set payments for a number of years, which you choose. The longer the length of time, the better the potential tax savings for you. When the term is up, the remaining trust assets go to you, your family, or other beneficiaries you select. This is an excellent way to transfer property to family members at a minimal cost.

As recognition for your gift, you will become a member of our Carnegie Society.

Want to leave a significant gift to the Library but still want to retain income during your life? A charitable remainder trust might be a good fit.

A charitable remainder trust provides you or other named individuals income each year for life or a period not exceeding 20 years from assets you give to the trust you create.

Benefits of a charitable remainder trust include:

  • Potential for a partial charitable income tax deduction
  • Potential for increased income
  • Up-front capital gains tax avoidance

As recognition for your gift, you will become a member of our Carnegie Society.

Invest in our future!

You have the power to help the Library lead and support the community into the future. How? By making an endowed gift. Your gift is an investment in our future, helping us grow and thrive for years to come.

As recognition for your gift, you will become a member of our Carnegie Society.

To create an endowment, you give cash, securities, or other assets that we carefully invest. If you can’t give up assets today, you can make the gift in your will, specifying that your gift be used to fund an endowment. Your endowed fund will remain invested, with a portion of the interest being spent as needed to ensure it lasts forever.

Make a difference today and save on taxes. It’s possible when you support your Library through your IRA.

Are you 70½ years old or older?

You can give any amount (up to a maximum of $100,000) per year from your IRA directly to a qualified charity, such as the Library Legacy Foundation, without having to pay income taxes on the money. Gifts of $100,000 or less are eligible for this benefit, and you can feel good knowing that you are making a difference in your community. This popular gift option is commonly called the IRA charitable rollover, but you may also see it referred to as a qualified charitable distribution, or QCD for short.

Why consider this gift?

  • Your gift will be put to use today to benefit your community.
  • Beginning in the year you turn 73, you can use your gift to satisfy all or part of your required minimum distribution (RMD.)
  • You pay no income taxes on the gift. The transfer generates neither taxable income nor a tax deduction, so you benefit even if you do not itemize your deductions.
  • Since the gift doesn’t count as income, it can reduce your annual income level.

To include us in your plan, please use our legal name and federal tax ID number.

Legal Name: Library Legacy Foundation of the Toledo Lucas County Public Library

Address: 325 Michigan St., Toledo, OH 43604

Federal Tax ID Number: 34-1632308

Tip: It’s critical to let us know of your gift because many popular retirement plan administrators assume no obligation to notify a charity of who the gift is from. Oftentimes, we receive a check without a name associated with it. We would like to give you credit and thank you for your generosity.

Please seek the advice of your tax advisor, attorney, or financial planner.

A gift of stocks or securities to the Library Legacy Foundation can be arranged via electronic transfer or by receipt of stock certificates. The gift provides a full income tax deduction, can negate capital gains tax, and may also avoid estate taxes.

By including a bequest to the Library Legacy Foundation in your will or living trust, you are ensuring that we can continue to impact the lives of our community for years to come. As recognition for your gift, you will become a member of our Carnegie Society.

So, how do you remember the Library in your will? While planning or updating your will, simply tell your attorney that you want to leave something to the Library Legacy Foundation.

A common practice when including a bequest in your estate is to leave a percentage, rather than a fixed amount, to the Library Legacy Foundation. That way, your gift remains in proportion to other bequests. Simple bequest language might include:

“I give, devise, and bequeath the (sum of/ percentage of/ residue of my estate) to the Library Legacy Foundation of the Toledo Lucas County Public Library (EIN: 34-1632308), a not-for-profit corporation with principal offices located in Toledo, Ohio.”
