Mary Shelley wrote Frankenstein while on vacation in 1816 when it had been that suggested her and her friends have a competition to see who could write the scariest story. Published anonymously at first in 1818, Mary Shelley finally put her name to the novel in 1821, forever changing literature as we know it. Here are some other women-authored horror masterpieces to honor Mary Shelley and her breakthrough for women in the horror genre.
