10 Albums You Need to Hear for National Emo Day

Emo is a rather contentious genre of music and subculture. For many, it represents a weird period of time when eyeliner and swoopy hair was paired with dark, awkwardly personal lyrics, often about failed relationships and self-harm. For others, emo is a legit music form that grew out of the '80s hardcore scene and was characterized by excellent musicianship and honest self-expression. Contemporary artists as diverse as Olivia Rodrigo, KennyHoopla, Machine Gun Kelly, and Phoebe Bridgers remind us that while emo is not as mainstream as it was 20 years ago, it is still a major influence on music today. Whether you like the goth theater kid aesthetic of My Chemical Romance, the sensitive sad boi vibes of Dashboard Confessional, or you're an old school purist who listens to Jawbreaker, Rites of Spring, and Sunny Day Real Estate, we have an eclectic mix of stellar emo jams that are sure to brighten your day. Or make it sadder? Not sure how that works.
