Looking forward to Cedar Point’s opening day? Or maybe you’re already counting down the days until Halloweekends. Either way, it’s a great time to celebrate the fact that you’re not the main character in any of these horrific attractions.
fantasticland by Mike Bockoven
When photos appear online showing the eviscerated corpses left from the destruction of Fantasticland, something doesn't add up. Told through first-person interviews and pieces of the investigation, readers uncover the grisly details like a real citizen sleuth.
joyland by Stephen King
This one leans more heavily into crime thriller than it does horror, but it's still noteworthy. Think summer job gone totally wrong.
hide by Kiersten White
What appears to be a deadly game of hide-and-seek is also a meditation on social status and ancient curses. Not really straight-up horror, but a thriller with unseen monsters throughout.
hide
A graphic adaptation of the 2022 novel, I actually found this one more enjoyable. The story remains the same, but is taken to new heights, pun intended, with the artwork of Veronica and Andy Fish capturing the precise feel of old-school carnival advertisements.
wonderland by Jennifer Hillier
Several mysteries and several decades are woven into this tourist trap as Deputy Vanessa Castro navigates her first day on the job.
full tilt by Neal Shusterman
Probably one of the gnarliest Shusterman covers for this unhinged story, Full Tilt follows two brothers as they try to navigate a labyrinthine phantom carnival trying to trap them in forever.
something wicked this way comes by Ray Bradbury
Check any book lists about carnivals and you're bound to find this Ray Bradbury classic on all of them regardless of genre. it's about some kids in the Midwest. It's about a haunted, traveling carnival. It's everything I've ever wanted out of a real carnival.
hell fest
Traveling horror theme park becomes traveling slaughter fest!
zombieland
A modern classic, this gang of strangers take on the zombie apocalypse in a guts-filled trek across The United States in an attempt to find Pacific Playland-- the last zombie-free locale in the country.
willy's wonderland
Not an amusement park, but amusing nonetheless, Nicolas Cage plays the role of The Janitor in the now defunct Willy's Wonderland. What this abandoned family entertainment center needs custodial for, you'll have to watch to find out. (Not to be confused with Five Night's at Freddy's, but fans may enjoy the setting, regardless).
