10 Books About Queer History to Read During Toledo Pride Month

Posted on August 4, 2025

The first Pride marches in the United States took place on June 28, 1970, the first anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising. LGBTQIA+ Pride Month is often recognized during June as a result, but in Toledo, Pride is recognized during August.

Pride is a time for remembrance, protest, and celebration, but what are we commemorating? Queer history is long and complex, and there is much worth remembering and celebrating during Pride. Largely focused on the United States and Europe, the 10 nonfiction books featured below are thoroughly researched or are first-hand accounts, and they will certainly expand your knowledge of queer history.

Additionally, you can learn more about the queer history of Toledo from our Local History Department’s digital exhibit, TAGALA and Toledo’s LGBTQIA+ History. You can find even more queer history resources in the Library of Congress’ resource guide on LGBTQIA+ studies (https://guides.loc.gov/lgbtq-studies/external-websites), which includes a list of queer history archives.

For more materials like these, visit your local branch during August and ask about the LGBTQIA+ Pride Month display.
