While it remains important to help your child know their letters, numbers, and shapes, it is just as important to be sure your child is socially and emotionally ready for kindergarten. Practice these social-emotional skills at home so your child will be kindergarten-ready.

Self-help: Have your child practice getting dressed, zipping jackets, tying shoes, using the bathroom independently, and washing their hands properly.

Self-control: Play games where your child will have to practice waiting and taking turns. Talk about the emotions you notice in the book and video characters. Show your child how to take deep breaths to calm down.

Cooperation: Help your children be better listeners by asking them to help with simple tasks in your home. Praise their efforts and talk about how following directions is getting them ready to listen to their teacher. Also, visit the Library’s Play and Learn spaces, where your child can practice cooperating and sharing toys with others.

The Library’s Ready to Read Team (readytoread@toledolibrary.org) also provides families with free Kindergarten Readiness training. Families can watch this video, and then complete a quick form to request a free Kindergarten Kit.
