10 Exciting Comics from New Teen Titans Writer Marv Wolfman for Old and New Fans

Very few creators have a comic book resume as impressive as Marv Wolfman, who turns 80 this week. Known for his hugely important DC Comics work in the 1980s, particularly The New Teen Titans and Crisis on Infinite Earths (both of which were drawn by the legendary George Pérez), one may forget that Wolfman also created countless comic characters who are still beloved to this day. His creations or co-creations include Cyborg, Raven, Starfire, Blade, Bullseye, Black Cat, Nova, Deathstroke, and Tim Drake, just to name a few. While he dabbled in screenwriting and video games, it's Wolfman's contributions to superhero comics that remain the most salient, enduring, and emotionally resonant. Even today, it's easy to see how see how his Teen Titans book was really the only competition to Chris Claremont's X-Men in the '80s.
From a comic nerd perspective, I think Marv Wolfman is so interesting because he was such huge comic fan before making his way into the industry (as opposed to, say, the creators who settled for comics until they could find "real" writing or illustration jobs). I mean, the guy ran a horror fanzine and even hung out with Jack Kirby when the King was in his prime. Today, comics are a slightly less disrespectable art form for young writers and artists (or comic people simply don't care as much about how they're perceived?), but Marv Wolfman certainly stood as an early indication that one of our own could not only turn their passion into a career, but also write some truly incredible, game-changing stories.
