Founded in 2001, Squirrel Appreciation Day is the preeminent holiday for one of nature's most important critters. Like with most holidays, Squirrel Appreciation Day is best celebrated with, of course, comic books. When it comes to squirrels and comics, the conversation starts and ends with one of Marvel's bravest and most infectiously optimistic heroes: Squirrel Girl. Although Squirrel Girl (aka Doreen Green) debuted in 1991's Marvel Super-Heroes #8, she wouldn't truly come into her own until author Ryan North (of Adventure Time and Fantastic Four fame) began writing The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl almost 25 years later—and she's been one of the comic industry's most charming and likeable heroes ever since. Don't let her squirrel powers fool you—she's defeated some of the toughest villains in the Marvel Universe!
