10 Hidden Gems to Check Out for Donald Duck Day

Known for his short temper and near unintelligible speech, Donald Duck is one of the most enduring of the classic Disney characters. Debuting in the animated short The Wise Little Hen from 1934, Donald’s subsequent films would truly establish him as the cranky, insecure duck we know and love today—in addition to introducing many mainstays of his adventures, like Daisy Duck and his nephews, Huey, Dewey, and Louie. Some of Donald’s most interesting and under appreciated appearances, however, would take place in the pages of comic books, where legendary creators like Carl Barks and Don Rosa created iconic stories that are still being read today (it was also in the pages of the comics that Barks gave the world the equally amazing Scrooge McDuck, future star of DuckTales). If it’s been a minute since you’ve thought about Disney’s resident angry duck, this National Donald Duck Day is the perfect time to reacquaint yourself with some of his (and his rich uncle’s) best tales. Sure, Mickey Mouse represents optimism and Goofy embodies sincerity, but it is Donald’s penchant for getting into miserable situations and losing his temper that makes him so endearing to fans today.
