10 Sensational Mech Books, 45 Years After Gundam

One of the most celebrated and influential anime in history, Mobile Suit Gundam debuted on April 7th, 1979. Depicting the war between the Earth Federation and the Principality of Zeon, Gundam is now seen as the gold standard for the giant robot (or mech/mecha) genre, and has produced countless sequels, offshoots, and alternate timelines that continue to this day (‘90s kids may remember the beloved Gundam Wing in particular when it was shown regularly on Cartoon Network). While the Gundam series has expanded greatly over the past four and a half decades, the original from 1979 (now often referred to as Gundam 0079), has perhaps had the greatest and most lasting impact on pop culture. Although the anime was not initially a resounding success, the release of model kits featuring the show’s numerous mechs, known as mobile suits—including the iconic RX-78-2 Gundam, from which the series derives its name—helped to popularize Gundam and expand the franchise. So, in honor of Gundam approaching the half-century mark, we’ve selected 10 comics and manga featuring mechs, mecha, mobile suits, and all manner of giant robots. To join in all the excitement, all you need is your library card!
