Approaching the horror genre can be daunting, especially if one doesn’t know where to begin. For example, without the proper information, what comes across as a classic ghost story may be grappling with generational trauma in ways that can be distressing. That said, some horror really is just written to be written. Consider the romance readers who may flock together and discuss which scenes had them kicking their feet. Or the fantasy readers who analyze the intricate histories of their favorite fictional kingdom as passionately as a mystery reader scrutinizes clues and what may be red herrings. When books transcend the confines of genre, it’s great. Super fun, but sometimes we just want a scary story to be a scary story and that can be fun too. The following list is an introductory, not-at-all-comprehensive guide to the genre featuring books and films mostly dealing with hauntings and possession– classic horror subgenres. Also, for some reason, quite a few different spooky dimensions to travel through.
Happy haunting!
