20 Years of Revenge of the Sith (and the Best Star Wars Memes)

The Star Wars prequel trilogy is, to be generous, extremely divisive. Some view the three films (The Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones, and Revenge of the Sith) to be an insult to the original series, while for others, these movies were a formative part of their personal Star Wars journey. I take the stance that the prequels, while incredibly flawed, were a necessary addition to the Star Wars canon just for the memes.

Of the three prequal films, the final entry, Revenge of the Sith (released 20 years ago this week), is the standout for many fans. Not only does it feature the least amount of Jar Jar Binks, but it’s definitely the darkest, most serious, most coherent, and most emotionally devastating (I mean, Anakin and Obi Wan’s confrontation on the lava planet of Mustafar? Let’s just say the Oscars really dropped the ball that year). Which is to say, in comparison to its two predecessors, Revenge of the Sith is actually quite good, and has some truly beautiful moments that set it apart in a trilogy that is often bloated, inconsistent, and riddled with cringy dialogue.

In honor of two decades since its release, it might be time to revisit the characters, worlds, and spaceships of Revenge of the Sith—and we’ve selected just the media for that. Just don’t listen to anyone who tries to tell you about Sith Lord Darth Plagueis the Wise!
