25 Years On, D’Angelo’s “Voodoo” is a Landmark and a Legend

D’Angelo was born in Richmond, Virginia in 1974, and his passing on Oct. 14, 2025, is the music minus one. He was the dangerous muse who offered his initiates — ordinary Church kids, trusting and meticulous —Voodoo! (Just because the water is red doesn’t mean that it must be blood.) Some of us may even be convinced that this album is a commandment from God.
Listen to it, learn about it, follow where it leads. Ephemerally victorious, Faith Pennick, Lianne La Havas, and Amir “Questlove” Thompson each present themselves as erudite companions to this timeless Rhythm & Blues record, recorded between 1997 and 1999 at the Electric Lady Studios in New York City but also ancient and edificial.
