Slow Horses on Apple TV+, based on the Slough House series on novels by Mick Herron, is about a group on second-rate British spies navigating their way through the inner workings of MI5 while dealing with everyday spy stuff like kidnappings, ex-Soviet sleeper agents, betrayal, and paperwork. In a departure from most spy fiction, the series’ main character, Cold War spy veteran Jackson Lamb, isn’t the typical well-regarded hero with complexities (LeCarre’s George Smiley) or flashy womanizer (Fleming’s James Bond). Lamb is instead trends toward eating too much Chinese takeout, chain-smoking cigarettes, letting loose flatulence in abundance, and generally being an all around jerk.
