From May 31 to June 1, 1921, the Greenwood District of Tulsa, Oklahoma was looted and destroyed by white rioters. The Greenwood District was a prosperous business and residential area, commonly referred to as “Black Wall Street” until it was burned down. Upwards of 10,000 residents were made homeless and between 100-300 were killed. Efforts to rebuild by Black residents were not aided by city and county government — and were even met with resistance initially.

Explore titles about the Tulsa Race Massacre that wiped out a bustling Black economy but could not eradicate the resiliency that lives on today in Black Tulsa residents and all Black people.
