She was born Phoebe Ann Mosey in 1860 in a log cabin in rural Ohio, but she grew up to become the world-famous Annie Oakley. Parlaying her childhood skill as a game hunter into global stardom as a sharpshooter, Annie delighted paying audiences with her ability to hit corks, dimes, and playing cards with casual ease. She performed for Queen Victoria, befriended Sitting Bull and Thomas Edison, offered military assistance to President McKinley, and rose to be one of the main — and one of the most highly paid — draws in Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show.
