You may have heard about the Pura Belpré award, but have you heard about the woman who inspired it? Pura Belpré (1899-1982) was the first Puerto Rican librarian hired at the New York Public Library. She was known for her storytelling and puppeteering- especially Puerto Rican folktales. Pura wrote books including Perez and Martina and Juan Bobo. The Pura Belpré Award was created in 1996 to honor children’s books that celebrate the Latinx cultural experience. Here are books about Pura Belpré and some recent Belpré Award honorees!
