“Your brilliant first flop was a raging success! Come on, let’s get busy and on to the next!” – Great-great – aunt Rose.

I love that bit of text from “Rosie Revere, Engineer” and wish I could incorporate that philosophy in my daily life. That said, I’m not a super big fan of message heavy titles. But will make an exception for this failure-is-a-part-of-life-perseverance-is where-it’s-at title.

So, Rosie Revere is a budding engineer. She shares her creations with her family until one of her quirky inventions fails and her favorite uncle laughs at her. Mortified, she now creates in secret and hides her constructions under her bed. When her great-great aunt Rose (g-a-a Rose), who is clearly modeled on “Rosie the Riveter,” arrives for a visit, she shares with young Rosie that she has accomplished everything she wanted to do except fly a plane. Young Rosie decides to help g-a-a Rose realize her dream. The spectacular craft flies for a moment and then crashes. Which of course leads to a bunch of try, try again coaching from g-a-a Rose.

This silly and endearing story is a good one to encourage readers and listeners alike.

“Rosie Revere, Engineer” by Angela Beaty is just one of the many great books on the 101 Picture Book Challenge list.
