Because it took two and a half years for the news of Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation to reach Texas, Juneteenth is often called “America’s second Independence Day.” It is celebrated annually on June 19th to commemorate the end of slavery in the United States. After a decades long campaign by the “grandmother of Juneteenth,” Opal Lee, to recognize it as a national holiday, President Joe Biden signed the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act into federal law on June 17, 2021. Take time to learn about the history behind the date of our country’s newest holiday with the latest books for kids and adults.
