Love Alien? Top 10 Essential(ish) Films to Prepare for Romulus

A new Alien film is upon us in the form of Fede Álvarez’s Alien: Romulus, which is great news for fans of the influential sci-fi/horror series—unless of course it’s terrible. As we’ve discussed before, Alien has a rather inconsistent track record when it comes to movies, not to mention comics, novels, video games, and just about everything else, so now is the perfect time to set the franchise back on course. Whether Alien: Romulus saves the series or not, fans have plenty of other Alien-adjacent films to give them their fix. Like all great works of fiction, Alien has plenty of influences (see Planet of the Vampires below), but also plenty of imitators, most of which, as you might expect, do not hold a candle to the original. However, we’ve selected some of the best—or at least most interesting—films that have ties to the legacy of Alien, either visually, conceptually, or because they also have a parasitic creature terrorizing people in space.

For more great movies, make sure to check out the offerings of your local Library branch as well as the Kanopy app.

If these are not sufficiently obscure or difficult enough to track down for you, make sure to check out Shocking Dark (a 1989 knockoff from Italy that has Terminator vibes and swipes whole scenes from Aliens) and Lily C.A.T. (an anime that rips off John Carpenter’s The Thing just as much as it does Alien). However, skip the very unofficial sequel, Alien 2: On Earth.
