One of the most popular fighting and arcade games of all time, the influence of Street Fighter on the medium of video games cannot be overstated. While the first game in the series debuted in arcades in 1987, it would not become the cultural juggernaut we know today until four years later with the release of Street Fighter II. In addition to introducing many of the character mainstays of the series, like Guile, Chun Li, and Zangief, the sequel was particularly notable for popularizing fighting games on home consoles, with arcades ports available on the Super Nintendo, Sega Genesis, and even Game Boy (although that version is not recommended). Numerous prequels, sequels, and spin-offs later (including crossovers with both X-Men and Tekken), Street Fighter is still leading the way with the fighting genre, albeit with the enhancements of modern consoles. So get ready for the sixth installment of one of video games’ most enduring franchises by practicing your hadoukens, blasting Guile’s Theme, and most importantly, checking out some of our favorite Street Fighter books and movies.
