The Most Sensational Woman in Comics: Wonder Woman at 85

Let’s get this part out of the way: Wonder Woman is a big deal. While not the first superheroine, Diana of Themyscira has perhaps left a greater mark on the superhero genre (possibly the entire medium of comics) than any other fictional woman. Created by the psychologist William Moulton Marston (who is almost as interesting as the hero he developed), Wonder Woman debuted 85 years ago this week in the pages of Sensation Comics #1. Wonder Woman was conceived as the ideal leader, a feminist beacon of hope, and (according to Marston), the kind of peaceful, enlightened figure who should be running society—and it’s hard to argue with that. Wonder Woman would go from World War II hero to Justice Society member to fashion guru/martial artist (the ‘60s were weird) to TV star, all while remaining the champion of Themyscira (you know, the Greek-mythology-inspired island without any men).

In honor of the most important woman in comics, check out some of her best, action-packed, and most timeless stories below.
