With popular video games, movies, card games, an app, and much more, Pokémon is a pop culture institution like few others. While many recall the height of Pokémon in the late 1990s, the video games in particular have continued to find consistent popularity (across a variety of gaming systems) for decades. Pokémon returned to the mainstream in a huge way in 2016 with the release of Pokémon GO, an app that put you in the role of Pokémon trainer—with the added benefit of encouraging users to go outside and explore their communities. At the height of the pandemic, Pokémon cards also saw a massive resurgence as millennials finally found the time to return to one of their favorite childhood pastimes. Today, Pokémon shows no sign of slowing down. So dust off your Game Boy and trading card binder, load up Pokémon GO, and catch all of these excellent books on the topic of Japan’s signature pocket monsters.
