Formed in 1983 by Joseph Simmons, Darryl McDaniels, and Jason Mizell (or Rev. Run, DMC, and Jam Master Jay, if you’d prefer), Run-DMC helped usher in the Golden Age of Hip Hop. The first hip hop group to achieve gold, platinum, and multi-platinum records, Run-DMC solidified many of the tropes and styles associated with hip hop, while influencing countless MCs and DJs—a trend that continues to this day. If all you know is the collab they did with Aerosmith, now is the perfect time to pop on some Adidas, zip up your tracksuit, and take it back to Run-DMC’s debut album, which was released 40 years ago this week.
