BUILDING FOR THE FUTURE:

Where will the new Whitehouse Branch be located?

We were initially working to build the new Whitehouse Branch within Blue Creek Metropark. However, quite a bit has changed since the Library and Metroparks Toledo embarked on this initiative, including reduced funding for public libraries at the state level and uncertainty around the future of property taxes as a revenue source.

As a result, the Library has decided to build a new library outside of Blue Creek Metropark but still within Whitehouse village limits. Budget and timelines also contributed to this decision.

The precarity of library funding for the immediate future requires us to take a more conservative approach on this project. By pivoting in this direction, TLCPL is being a responsible steward of the public dollars it receives and is setting this new library up for sustainable success.

The Library is in conversation with village administration to find an alternative location for a library branch and anticipates it opening in its to-be-determined site within the next two years.

When will the new location open?

We are planning on opening the new branch at the end of 2027. (Subject to change due to materials or construction delays.)

When does construction begin?

Construction is scheduled to begin in the second half of 2026.

How long will the current volunteer-led Whitehouse Library remain open?

The volunteers hope to keep the existing library open until the end of 2026 or whatever is necessary to accommodate the construction schedule.

How do the current volunteers feel about the new library?

The current volunteers are very pleased with this news! Many of the volunteers worked previously with the Toledo Lucas County Public Library to establish a branch in Whitehouse, so this development is a dream come true.

Can the current volunteers be involved in the new library?

Yes! Volunteers will have numerous opportunities, including:

  • Completing activities and crafts, playing games, and reading with children of all ages.
  • Assisting with Library programs and events at various Library locations.
  • Fulfilling optional opportunities, including but not limited to straightening shelves, inputting data, and maintaining the cleanliness of the Library’s collection and materials.

What will the new library look like?

The design process has not yet begun (that is scheduled for early 2026), but you can expect design elements that include natural lighting, comfortable reading spaces, community and study rooms, and dedicated areas for children, teens and adults. The community will be able to share ideas and input during community listening sessions as part of the design phase.

What will the new library offer?

The new Whitehouse Branch will be a full-service branch library with a large collection of books and materials, youth areas, quiet study spaces, meeting rooms, technology access, and more. The community will be able to share ideas and input during community listening sessions as part of the design phase.

What is the overall schedule?

Community listening sessions: Q2 2026

Design phase: To begin a few months after property acquisition is complete

Construction phase: Q1 – Q4 2027

Opening: Q4 2027

Dates are approximate and subject to change.

In spring 2024, the Library sent a survey to the Lucas County community to learn what you love about your Library and how we could improve our buildings to better meet your needs. This is what 322 Whitehouse (and Waterville) neighbors said they wanted in an updated space.
