10 Exciting Batman/Robin Comics for Take Your Kid to Work Day

Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day (formerly Take Our Daughters to Work Day until 2003) is a fairly significant event in the United States (at least, among second or third tier holidays). Sure, it gives the youth of our nation an opportunity to glimpse into their future in the workforce, but just as importantly, it’s, you know…a day away from school. While most kids will observe relatively un-glamorous jobs (such as a librarian, for example), the world of comics gives us one precocious young boy who gets to assist his dad with decidedly less mundane work. I am of course referring to Damian Wayne (aka Robin) and his famous father, Batman.

For those who haven’t kept up with the comics in a few decades, Damian has a somewhat weird history. Technically, he first appeared in the 1987 graphic novel, Son of the Demon, by Mike Barr and Jerry Bingham, in which he was briefly introduced as the newborn son of Bruce Wayne and Talia al Ghul—although it was unclear for many years whether this comic was considered canon. Over 20 years later, Damian would reappear during Grant Morrison’s run on Batman—this time as a child trained by the League of Assassins (which, I guess is kind of expected when your grandfather is Ra’s al Ghul). Damian would eventually take on the mantle of Robin, bringing an intensity, cynicism, and arrogance to the role that had never been seen before (his time working with the original Robin, Dick Grayson, when Bruce was thought to be dead was a particularly fascinating role reversal for Batman/Robin).

So, this Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day, celebrate with your own little ones or check out these comics that feature both Batman and his lethal little offspring. Or do both. They’ll make you appreciate that your kids aren’t regularly fighting the Joker or Mr. Freeze. I hope.
