Best Books 2024: Horror

Horror can be more than cheap scares and monsters. It’s a way to contend with our fears and empathize with others. And, yeah, it may also fuel a contained adrenaline rush. Plenty of books have gone deeper into why we read horror than my word count allows so I’ll direct you to Jeremy Dauber’s American Scary or Emily C. Hughes’ Horror for Weenies, both published this year if you’re curious.
This year saw the publication of some exceptional titles by established authors. I’m partial to unconventional formats, cursed media, or whatever feels like a found footage film in print so Paul Tremblay’s Horror Movie and Richard Chizmar’s Memorials were fast favorites. I’ll even admit that I put Josh Malerman’s Incidents Around the House down at page eight because I was reading it while home alone one evening. Its unique format and narrative voice set me on edge in a way little else has.
With debuts like Polybius by Collin Armstrong and Listen to Your Sister by Neena Viel on the horizon, 2025 appears to be just as promising. What we can think up at the suggestion of a page can be far worse than a jump scare on screen.
