Lit for Liberation: A YA Juneteenth Reading List

Celebrated on June 19, Juneteenth marks the day in 1865 when enslaved people in Texas finally learned they were free—more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. It’s a powerful reminder that freedom isn’t just declared—it must be delivered. Juneteenth is more than just a history lesson. It’s a moment to honor Black excellence, creativity, resistance, and joy. It’s a time to reflect, learn, and celebrate the culture and stories that have shaped the world we live in today. One of the best ways to do that? Read books by Black authors, about Black lives.
