Jimmy Carter, who died Dec. 29 at the age of 100, was an unlikely president, a born-again Georgia peanut farmer who served as the 39th president of the United States during a single fraught term in the White House. His presidency coincided with tumultuous times, including inflation, an energy crisis, global unrest, and the American hostage crisis in Iran. Reflect on what life was like during that era by exploring books that delve into the challenges and context of the time.

But as history’s longest-lived president with the longest post-presidency, Carter didn’t let his time in the White House define his legacy. He remained active with humanitarian and peacekeeping activities, establishing the Carter Center in Atlanta, swinging a hammer for Habitat for Humanity, volunteering for hurricane relief, and occasionally stirring up controversies with his involvement in world diplomacy and opinions about politics in Israel. These efforts formed an impressive array of retirement projects. Carter was also an uncommonly prolific author for an ex-president. While he may not have as many books as James Patterson, he wrote them all while also building houses and helping to nearly eradicate Guinea worm disease.
