Known as the Godfather of Manga, Osamu Tezuka is one of the most influential artists of the medium. While he was an extremely prolific creator (he drew over 150,000 pages of manga), Western audiences are likely most familiar with his most popular creation, Astro Boy. Originally serialized from 1952 to 1968, Astro Boy would be adapted into numerous animated series, films, and video games. Much like Jack Kirby and Walt Disney, Tezuka’s influence is so widespread that it’s difficult to quantify. You can see traces of his style in Megaman, Pokémon, Disney films (compare his Kimba the White Lion to The Lion King), and countless other anime, manga, comics, cartoons, and video games of today. If you’re new to manga, Astro Boy and the selections below are a great place to start.
