From major characters like Wonder Woman, She-Hulk, and Storm to underrated, influential creators like Ramona Fradon, Glynis Oliver, and Alison Bechdel, comics have long been an important space for female representation and creativity. This is despite stereotypes to the contrary.
Between the seventeen immensely talented women who won Eisner Awards in 2024, such as Kelly Sue DeConnick, Mariko Tamaki, Jillian Tamaki, Peach Momoko, Kelly Thompson, and Becky Cloonan, and Gail Simone taking over Marvel’s flagship mutant book, Uncanny X-Men, there is much to celebrate—though mainstream comics still have a long way to go.
During last Women’s History Month, we highlighted major artists. This year, we’ve selected some of the most important writers in the comic book medium. Works by each of these comic writers can be accessed on hoopla with your Library card.
