BUILDING FOR THE FUTURE:

In 2019, the Toledo Library enlisted HBM Architects and Interior Designers to develop a facilities master plan that examined its locations and provided a list of priorities and recommendations to help move TLCPL forward. This working plan was based on data collected during 2018 and continues to evolve based on the changing needs of the communities the Library serves. Below are key takeaways for the Oregon Branch.

A digital copy of the full 200-plus page facilities master plan is available upon request.

Branch overview (based on 2018 data)

Service population: 23,523 (5.51% of total service population)
Median age: 42
Households with children: 30.7%
Households: 9,403
Mean household income: $62,752
Population living below the poverty line: 6.33%
Gross square feet: 18,768 square feet
Year constructed: 1989, expanded in 2015
Collection size: 67,758 items
Programs: 564 in 2018
Meeting room size: 1,252 square feet
Meeting room capacity: 100 people (meeting room is subdividable)

General Observations

  • The building shape works well with the lot.
  • The children’s area service point has worked well here.
  • People with laptops like the study rooms. Consider power in the walls here, instead of into the tables.
  • Display, shelving, and furniture pieces have been moved around the branch since reopening as was the intent of the open floor plan.

In spring 2024, the Library sent a survey to the Lucas County community to learn what you love about your Library and how we could improve our buildings to better meet your needs. This is what 266 Oregon neighbors said they wanted in an updated space.

Services to the Oregon community began in February 1965 at the Oregon Plaza Shopping Center on Coy and Navarre Streets. This location was enlarged in 1980 as usage of the facility increased. In April 1989, the Branch moved to its current location on Dustin Road. A complete renovation project began in 2014, expanding the Library from 15,000 to 18,700 square feet. After the renovation, there was an interactive area for children and teens, as well as updated meeting spaces.
