Building for the future:

In 2019, the Toledo Library enlisted HBM Architects and Interior Designers to develop a facilities master plan that examined its locations and provided a list of priorities and recommendations to help move TLCPL forward. This working plan was based on data collected during 2018 and continues to evolve based on the changing needs of the communities the Library serves. Below are key takeaways for the Waterville Branch.

A digital copy of the full 200-plus page facilities master plan is available upon request.

Branch overview (based on 2018 data)

Service population: 14,697 (3.44% of total service population)
Median age: 42
Households with children: 36.9%
Households: 5,424
Mean household income: $86,083
Population living below the poverty line: 5.6%
Gross square feet: 12,227 square feet
Year constructed: 1964, renovated in 1980, expanded in 2004
Collection size: 59,085 items
Programs: 521 in 2018
Meeting room size: 1,316 square feet
Meeting room capacity: 84 people (meeting room is subdividable)

General Observations

  • Need a good play space for children.
  • Meeting space is inflexible and not very large.
  • Need more quiet study space.
  • Nice, welcoming feel, bright, and cheery.
  • INtuitive invitation to explore deeper into the library.
  • Meeting rooms are nice, lots of grass, and the location in the back of the library adjacent to the restrooms has potential for after-hours access.
  • Meeting rooms are the only area in the library with floor to ceiling windows.
  • However, the rest of the building has a great amount of natural light throughout.
  • Self-checkout machines are convenient to holds.
  • Welcoming and inviting.
  • Good natural light.
  • More seating.
  • The stack area is a little crowded.
  • Good integration of artwork into the building.
  • Could use some cosmetic updates.
  • Zoning of the building may challenge the ability to accommodate, adapt to future change, etc. It could also be impeded by the current location of the meeting rooms and restrooms but the rest of the building is fairly open.
  • There is a great historic feel to Waterville, the architecture of the building could relate more to that.
  • Consider adding face-out material display throughout shelving areas.
  • Consider using circulation desk for self-checkout.
  • Consider one centralized service point.
  • Consider creating more of an identity for the children’s area.
  • Create a more browseable collection area for both adults and children.

In spring 2024, the Library sent a survey to the Lucas County community to learn what you love about your Library and how we could improve our buildings to better meet your needs. This is what 322 Waterville neighbors said they wanted in an updated space.

Serving southwestern Lucas County, the Waterville Branch has been at its present location since 1964, having outgrown classroom space at the local elementary school. After a 1980 renovation, the facility outgrew its space and expanded again in 2004. Waterville remains a meeting place for a diverse and growing population.
