BUILDING FOR THE FUTURE:

In 2019, the Toledo Library enlisted HBM Architects and Interior Designers to develop a facilities master plan that examined its locations and provided a list of priorities and recommendations to help move TLCPL forward. This working plan was based on data collected during 2018 and continues to evolve based on the changing needs of the communities the Library serves. Below are key takeaways for the King Road Branch.

A digital copy of the full 200-plus page facilities master plan is available upon request.

Median age: 39
Households with children: 35%
Households: 11,266
Mean household income: $93,147
Population living below the poverty line: 7%
Gross square feet: 22,240 square feet

Collection size: 66,322 items

General Observations

  • Investigate alternative seating options for the podium service point.
  • The drive-up service window is well used.
  • The recording studio needs additional soundproofing between it and the editing room.
  • Improved soundproofing will allow this room to be used for quiet study.
  • Consider using mobile displays or furniture to create a path to the collection area.
  • Consider enclosing some space with glass as another quiet study room.
  • Consider repurposing computer station tables for public seating.

In spring 2024, the Library sent a survey to the Lucas County community to learn what you love about your Library and how we could improve our buildings to better meet your needs. This is what 389 King Road neighbors said they wanted in an updated space.

In 2016, construction of the King Road Branch Library was undertaken due to the growing Sylvania and Holland communities. The construction began next to Sylvania Southview High School. The Branch offers students a safe space to learn, attend programs, or explore the Library after school hours. King Road’s open concept design makes it a new type of Library space, which focuses on a collaborative atmosphere for exploration and learning.
